Grant Making

The Transforming Birth Fund is interested in the US maternity care system and considers proposals that impact policy and practice, have the potential for system-wide impact, support collaboration among maternity care practitioners, or address racial disparities in maternity care outcomes.  The Fund awards $500,000 a year; grants range in size from $5,000 to $100,000.

The 2017 deadline is Friday, November 17.

Prospective applicants are asked to contact Betsy McNamara, consultant to the Transforming Birth Fund, prior to submitting an application to determine eligibility.

The Transforming Birth Fund will award its final grants at the end of 2018.

Since 2005 the Transforming Birth Fund has granted $5.5 million to catalyze the movement to lower the use of unnecessary medical interventions and promote physiologic birth.

For Funders

The Transforming Birth Fund is just one of many funders focused on birth outcomes and changing the US maternity care system.  Funders from across the country, small regional funders, to those with a large statewide focus, to funders interested in health equity, have joined together to form the Midwifery Funders Group.  The group convenes by conference call monthly to share insights, funding strategies, and learn from experts in the field.  If you are interested in joining, please contact Betsy McNamara, consultant to the Transforming Birth Fund at

This is an emerging movement with many opportunities to make an impact.  Join us!
